Ngày xưa, Chúa Giê-su có nhiều đệ tử lắm, thánh Luca ghi nhận rằng có tới “bảy mươi hai môn đệ” (Lc 10:1). Bảy mươi hai người này là những người được Chúa Giê-su yêu thương, tin tưởng, và trao cho quyền năng để đạp lên rắn rết, bọ cạp và mọi thế lực ma quỷ … (Lc 10:17,19). Thế nhưng khi vừa nghe Chúa Giêsu nói: “Thịt tôi thật là của ăn, và máu tôi thật là của uống. Ai ăn thịt và uống máu tôi…. ” (Ga 6:55-56) … thì nhiều người trong số họ đã phản đối ra mặt: “Lời này chướng tai quá! Ai mà nghe nổi …[Sau đó họ đã] rút lui, không còn đi theo Người nữa.”

Cũng giống như các môn đệ của Chúa khi xưa, ngày hôm nay, có rất nhiều người không tin rằng “Thịt [Chúa Giê-su] thật là của ăn, và máu [Chúa Giê-su] thật là của uống. Ai ăn thịt và uống máu [Chúa Giê-su], thì ở lại trong [Ngài] và [Ngài] ở lại trong [họ]” (Ga 6:55-56). Người ta nghi ngờ vào sự hiện diện thực sự của Chúa Giêsu trong tấm bánh và ly rượu sau khi linh mục truyền phép.

The Gospel of Luke records that seventy-two disciples (Lk 10:1) were chosen to be the early emissaries of Jesus. These seventy-two were the people whom Jesus loved, trusted, and had given the power to tread upon serpents, scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy… (Lk 10:17,19). However, when they heard Jesus say: “For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood…” (Jn 6:55-56) …many among the group protested: “This saying is hard! Who can accept it. [As a result of this, many of his disciples] returned to their former way of life, and no longer accompanied him.”

Just as those disciples of the Lord in the past, there are many people today who do not believe that “the flesh [of Jesus] is true food, and blood [of Jesus] is true drink. Whoever eats and drinks blood of [Jesus], remains in [Him] and [He] in [them]” (Jn 6:55-56). Some of us may have doubts concerning the true presence of Jesus in the bread and wine after the Consecration of the Mass.
