Khi còn là một người nô lệ, triết gia Aesop được chủ sai đi mua một thức ăn ngon nhất. Ông mua toàn lưỡi heo đem về làm thức ăn. Người chủ thấy lạ hỏi. Ông đáp: “Lưỡi là chìa khoá tất cả những lý lẽ sự thật, nhờ nó mà con người có được địa vị cao sang, được người khác kính trọng.” Lần khác, người chủ sai ông đi mua thức ăn dở nhất. Ông cũng mua toàn là lưỡi heo. Ông chủ ngạc nhiên hỏi. Ông giải thích: “Lưỡi là cái quý giá nhưng nó còn là vũ khí rất là lợi hại khi con người dùng nó để hại người khác, để bênh vực cho điều ác.”

Bạn thân mến, cái lưỡi vừa có lợi nhưng cũng có hại cho con người. Nghe lời nói của ta thốt ra khỏi miệng, người ta biết ngay ta là người tốt hay là người xấu. Dựa trên những câu nói, những lời phát biểu của ta, người xung quanh sẽ biết ta là người hiền lành, đơn sơ chất phác hay là người dữ tợn, mưu mẹo và nham hiểm. Cho dù ta có khôn khéo, có dẻo miệng, và cố ý che dấu tài tình mấy đi chăng nữa, thì khi mở miệng nói chuyện, ta cũng không thể nào che dấu được con người thật của ta, bởi vì sách Huấn Ca đã nói…

As a slave, the philosopher Aesop was ordered by his master to go to town and purchase the best food. He went to the butcher’s shop and bought pigs’ tongues and prepared them for dinner. The master found it strange, so he questioned Aesop. Aesop responded: “The tongue is the key to a sound argument. For this reason, some people are able to acquire high status in society, others are able to attain respect from others.” On the next day, the master ordered him to go to town and purchase the worst food. He went to the butcher’s shop and again he purchased pigs’ tongues. Surprised by this, the master asked him why he had bought these again. Aesop explained: “The tongue is a precious thing, but it is also a very powerful weapon when people use it to destroy others or defend evildoers.”

My dear friends, the tongue is both beneficial and detrimental to humans. When a person hears the words that come out of our mouth, they know right away whether we are a good or bad person. Based on the phrases that we use or the statements that we express, those around us will figure out what type of person we are, whether we are gentle, simple, meek or fierce, cunning or ferocious. Even if we are gifted with fine words, no matter how hard we try to withhold our deficiencies, when we begin to speak we cannot suppress our true self, for thus the Book of Sirach described…
