Cuộc sống này có rất nhiều điều bất ngờ. Có những sự bất ngờ rất thú vị, đem lại cho người ta những sự thoải mái, vui tươi và hạnh phúc. Ví dụ như:

• Khi nghe tin một thanh niên hoang đàng, hút sách, cờ bạc, rượu chè … tự dưng hoán cải, xin vào dòng đi tu!
• Khi viên sĩ quan cánh sát không cho giấy phạt vì tội chạy quá tốc độ, nhưng chỉ cảnh cáo, kèm theo một lời khuyên: “Hãy về và đừng phạm tội nữa!”
• Khi nhìn thấy đứa con sau bao nhiêu năm bỏ đạo, giờ bước vào tòa xưng tội, tham dự thánh lễ, và rước lễ.

Và có những cái bất ngờ khiến cho người ta buồn phiền, chán nản, nhụt chí và thất vọng. Chẳng hạn như:

• Khi người mẹ nghe cô con gái út ngỏ ý muốn lập gia đình với một người lớn tuổi hơn cả mình.
• Khi nghe tin một cặp vợ chồng đạo đức thánh thiện, có con đàn, cháu đống … đưa ra tòa ly dị!
• Khi nghe tin Giám Mục này, linh mục kia, nữ tu nọ … ủng hộ cho các chính trị gia chủ trương phò phá thai, hôn nhân đồng tính, công khai chống lại những giáo huấn của Giáo Hội và giới luật của Thiên Chúa.

Life is full of unpredictable surprises. There are astounding surprises that bring people comfort, joy and happiness. For instance:

• Upon hearing the news of a prodigal young man, who suffered from substance abuse and drug addiction…all of a sudden converted and making inquiries about joining the monastic order!
• When the police officer spares you from a speeding ticket, but only gives a warning, followed by a piece of advice: “Go and do not sin anymore!”
• Upon seeing a child after many years of apostasy, entering the confessional stand, attending mass, and receiving communion.

And there are disturbing surprises that make people sad, depressed, discouraged, and frustrated. Such as:

• When the youngest daughter makes known the news to her mom that she is getting married to a much older man.
• Upon hearing the news of a virtuous couple with lots of children and grandchildren…abruptly file the divorce!
• When the news spread about this Bishop, that priest or consecrated religious women who supported politicians who advocated abortion, same-sex marriage, and they publicly dispute the teachings of the Church and the precepts of God.
